The Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) proudly presents the
Vietnam International Pepper and Spice Outlook 2025 (VIPO 2025). This
year’s conference comes at a pivotal moment for
the global spice
industry as we witness a resurgence in prices, fueled not only by
growing consumer demand but by the return of speculative interest. In
2024, black pepper reached historic heights,
entering the billion-dollar export club in Vietnam, a milestone for growers and traders alike.
The
scope of VIPO 2025 extends beyond Vietnam’s pepper industry to
encompass cassia and other Vietnamese spices that are equally affected
by global shifts. Climate change has introduced critical
challenges
for cassia growers, like Typhoon Yagi, which severely impacted cassia
regions in northern Vietnam. Unpredictable weather patterns like
droughts, excessive rainfall, and flooding impacting production.
Infrastructure challenges such as mechanical drying limitations further
underscore the urgency for sustainable solutions.
In collaboration
with industry stakeholders, governmental bodies, and international
agencies, VPSA is committed to addressing these issues head-on. VIPO
2025 offers a unique platform to discuss,
share insights, and
strategize on proactive measures for risk management, aiming to ensure
resilience and stability across the Vietnamese spice industry.
VIPO 2025 promises an engaging program, including networking opportunities, presentations, exhibitions and trips to Vietnam’s growing regions. Join us as we lead the conversation on risk management, guiding the spice industry towards a sustainable and prosperous future.
“2025 VPSA conference: Time for Risk Assessment”
2024 was yet another good year for growers not just in Vietnam but globally as prices rose over 100% from their bottom levels. In Vietnam Black pepper joined the BN USD export club after a decade.
A sudden rise in prices in a short time was a surprise and a test for the industry. New breed of demand called the speculative demand was back in action and spreading its wings amongst all factions. While Regulatory and Food safety challenges continue to get tougher, a new dimension of challenge which was dormant for a decade emerged in the origins. This was the challenge of counterparty management.
It is over 100 years in the modern times since Black pepper was freely tradeable. We have learnt enough from history that in times like these Risk management in all directions is essential. Be it on Volatility, Credit, Counterparty, Quality or Regulatory; a holistic assessment of the trade from a risk perspective is important. Keeping this in mind we have chosen Risk assessment and management as a central theme for this year’s conference.
2025 ushers a new era not only for Vietnam pepper but also for Cassia. We all have witnessed the perils of climate change in the growing regions of Cassia last year. Disruption to infrastructure, lack of mechanical drying and many other issues troubled the Cassia industry. Climate change is a reality and here to stay with droughts, excessive rain, flooding, excessive heat, etc. This is affecting all spices and as VPSA is no more just pepper but all other Vietnamese spices as well, we are actively working with agencies to provide better information and mitigation steps.
